Mr. Noriaki Yamashita, President of Toyota Motor Thailand, has announced its business performance during the first half of 2021, along with Thai automotive market projection in 2021, on 30 July 2021.

Mr. Yamashita said, “The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a significant impact on Thailand's automotive industry, particularly in light of the recent COVID-19 outbreak that has been more severe than previously anticipated. It has a negative influence on consumer confidence in the overall economy, causing consumers to delay their decision to purchase a new car. However, we remain optimistic that the situation will improve as a result of the government's efforts, as well as the government's plan to implement an effective vaccination scheme for Thai citizens which will help create herd immunity and boost people's confidence in carrying out concrete economic activities.”

Mr. Yamashita continued, “Although Thailand’s automotive industry was still tremendously affected by COVID-19 during the first half of 2021, car manufacturers proactively implemented various campaigns and promotional activities. In addition, we see the gradual increase of car sales generated from the previous 42nd Bangkok International Motor Show, as well as stimulating economic measurement from the government. These factors alleviated consumer anxieties and encouraged them to spend more. Therefore, the total number of cars sold in the domestic market was 373,191 units, up 13.6% from the previous year.”

For the automotive industry outlook of the entire year of 2021, Mr. Yamashita projected, "There are several factors that affect the outlook, such as the latest COVID-19 pandemic situation, including vaccine accessibility, together with the global economic trend and economic stimulus measures imposed by the government. We believe that the economy in the second half of this year will gradually recover with the efforts of the government, as well as the great support from all organizations in the private sector that join forces to solve the situation. Considering all the contributing factors, our latest market forecast for the year 2021 is 800,000 units, or 1% increase from last year’s performance.”

Regarding the forecast of Toyota CBU export for this entire year, our current target is at 322,000 units, or 50 % increase from last year due to the optimistic signs of market recovery in the destination markets influenced by multiple factors, such as the decline in COVID-19 cases, the progress of vaccination, and their governments' economic stimulus packages. In terms of our production, we are catching up with the international automotive market, which is performing better than predicted. The production volume in 2021 is expected to reach 580,000 units, representing 31 % increase from last year’s output. The estimation is based on our sales forecast in both domestic sales and export.

Mr. Yamashita also added " Despite the fact that Toyota has been adversely effected by COVID-19, we continue to support Thai society through the ‘Toyota Stay with You’ project, which we had provided Toyota vehicles to the Ministry of Interior, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and Chachoengsao Provincial Public Health Office, to assist them in carrying out their duties during the COVID-19 pandemic resolution. In addition, the company has also collaborated with dealers across the country to provide vehicle sanitization service, free of charge unlimited to all Auto brands customers by almost 1,300,000 units until now.

During this time, TMT continues to operate its business and contribute to Thai economy through our products, services and marketing activities, keeping the safety and health of our employees and all of our stakeholders in mind as a top priority and strictly following the required health protocols. Furthermore, we have not only retained all current employees as our valuable assets, but also increased our employment for more than 400 positions in our production plants over the past few months to support unemployment in current labor market, and we also have plans to add further employment in the future. This is our determination to help alleviate Thai economy during this difficult time, and we expect that the automotive industry will have an important role in contribution to drive Thai society and the economic stability in the future.

Mr. Yamashita concluded, “We would like to express our appreciation to the Thai Government, our valued customers, and all stakeholders, for the full support even during this difficult time. We stand firm on our global direction to ensure that Thailand will be our key regional hub for manufacturing and export, which ensures the growth and prosperity of the Thai automotive industry and Thai people.”
